Daredevil Man Without Fear

A fire burns deep within Matt Murdock. He was raised by a single father, an over-the-hill prizefighter with one last chance to make it good – a chance that cost him his life. Taunted and tormented by children while growing up, Matt’s life was irrevocably altered after he was blinded by radioactive materials while saving the life of an old man. The payoff? An unbreakable will and a keen intelligence, helping focus the super-senses he was blessed with during the accident. His story is one of love, pain, disappointment and strength. Witness the tour-de-force origin of the Man Without Fear by industry legends Frank Miller and John Romita Jr!

This is the best place to start, as Frank Miller writes what has become the definitive origin story for Daredevil in a way that captures the characters motivations and demons. Reading this first puts the other stories into context a little bit better for new readers. Regular $19.99, only $6!

Daredevil Marvel Masterworks Volume One

A Good Samaritan act stole young Matt Murdock’s sight, but also enhanced his remaining senses to superhuman level! After becoming a lawyer – and suffering the murder of his father – Matt now uses his powers to protect the innocent in New York City’s Hell’s Kitchen as Daredevil, the Man Without Fear! Relive Daredevil’s origin and first adventure, meet his memorable supporting cast, and also his many famous foes like the Owl, Mr. Fear and the deadly Eel!

It wouldn’t be fair to offer classic Dardevil stories without having one that goes all the way back to 1963. Presented here are the first eleven issues written by Stan Lee with artwork by Wally Wood in the back end. See Daredevil’s original goofy yellow costume, and read one of the issues that defined Marvel Comics in the 1960’s, Daredevil #7. A match up between Daredevil and the Sub Mariner should be ridiculous, but Marvel showed how it handled conflict between heroes, to a very satisfying ending. Regular $24.99, only $6!

Daredevil_Born_Again

“And I – I have shown him … that a man without hope is a man without fear.” The definitive Daredevil tale, by industry legends Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli! Karen Page, Matt Murdock’s former lover, has traded away the Man Without Fear’s secret identity for a drug fix. Now, Daredevil must find strength as the Kingpin of Crime wastes no time taking him down as low as a human can get.

Quite simply known as one of the best comic book stories ever. Mazzucchelli was the artist that Frank Miller made Batman Year One with, and his since of perspective both visually and emotionally is amazing. The definitive ‘deconstruction’ of a character down to his core values. Regular $19.99, only $6!

Daredevil_Guardian_Devil

A scared teenager on the run. An infant child some say is humanity’s savior. A former lover whose life is now hobbled by a terrible secret. A law partner accused of a horrible crime. A city being overcome by an inscrutable menace. They need a guardian. Someone to protect them. Someone with faith in them. They need Daredevil. “Guardian Devil” found Kevin Smith (Clerks, Chasing Amy) confidently transitioning from writing acclaimed screenplays to comics that hit the top of the sales charts and critics’ lists. It also found artist Joe Quesada at his peak as the stylist that would usher Marvel Comics into the 21st century – both as an artist and its future editor in chief.

Guardian Devil was the first comic book from Marvel’s Marvel Knights line, and basically helped to bring Daredevil back as a character creators wanted to work on again. The content is canon, it’s fits well into the overall mythos of Daredevil. Quesada at the top of his game is a sight to see too. Smith can be a bit wordy at times though. (As always)

Daredevil_By_Bendis_a_Maleev

During a character-defining run, Brian Michael Bendis crafted a pulp-fiction narrative that exploited the Man Without Fear’s rich tapestry of characters and psychodrama, and resolved them in an incredibly nuanced, modern approach. Now, this Eisner award-winning run is collected across three titanic trade paperbacks! In this volume, witness the Kingpin’s downfall at the hands of Sammy Silke and see how a down-on-his-luck FBI agent can change Matt’s life forever.

Bendis began one of Daredevil’s longest runs in this first volume. Very addictive stuff, like watching an entire season of a television series at once. The first four issues of this book were drawn by Kabuki artist David Mack, and were written by Bendis when he was still a weekly customer at our shop! Regular $34.99, only $6!!

Daredevil_By_Brubaker_and_Lark

After Bendis’s run, he didn’t just want to return Daredevil to the status quo for the next writer, so he let different writers pitch how they would handle the story knowing the consequences of his run. The winner was Ed Brubaker (Captain America The Winter Soldier, Iron Fist, and one of my favorite writers period) This run is a personal favorite as Daredevil spends some time in jail with the Punisher, fleshing out one of the most dynamic relationships in comic books. Regular $29.99, only $6!

Daredevil_by_MArk_Waid

It’s a fresh start for the Man Without Fear, with the all-star creative team of writer Mark Waid (CAPTAIN AMERICA) and artists Paolo Rivera and Marcos Martin (AMAZING SPIDER-MAN) at the helm! Matt Murdock is back in New York, but not everyone is happy to see him. Hoping to resuscitate his law practice, he takes on a police-brutality case – but someone is trying to silence the victim. While Murdock struggles in court, Daredevil hits the streets as Klaw, master of sound, makes his deadly return! Then, the blind literally lead the blind as a visually impaired client targeted for assassination holds the key to a global conspiracy perpetrated by some familiar foes. Can Daredevil protect the young man long enough to bring down an international criminal organization, or will their deadly enforcer get to him first?

This book is your introduction to the latest Daredevil run, which has been said to be second only to Hawkeye at Marvel at this point. Mark Waid has took Daredevil out of the crime noir setting and made him a fun character, while also maintaining mature storyline. I credit Wade as being one of the writers who brought comics out of their ultra violent funk in the 90’s by showing that people really do want well written stories about super heroes doing super stuff. Regular $15.99, only $6!

Elektra_Assassin

Meet Elektra Natchios, a young woman who has played many intriguing roles: gymnast, martial artist, ninja, assassin. But this enigmatic woman, trained in the arts of ninjitsu and renowned as the world’s deadliest assassin … is dead. Or is she? An unconscious woman washes ashore in a small Central American country. Two policemen are strangled. A diplomat is assassinated. A S.H.I.E.L.D. agent is brutally dismembered. Unrelated events? Hardly. Elektra has returned. Whether she’s been miraculously resurrected or this is an untold tale from Elektra’s past is left for the reader to decide. But one thing remains certain, Elektra is back with a vengeance. From the combined talents of two of comics’ greatest innovators – Frank Miller and Bill Sienkiewicz – comes this psychological excursion through the mind, body and soul of the world’s most dangerous woman.

This one’s extra credit, and is a great forgotten story. Sienkiewicz psychedelic painting style is held in check by a very solid story by Frank Miller. To the point where I wish this was mandatory reading for some current writers who can’t seem to hold a storyline together. Regular $19.99, only… you guessed it…six bucks!

So why are we making such a big deal out of this? Because at a point when people are getting a bit frustrated with the variant cover situation, we decided to switch up the game and provide you with stories for your money as opposed to a different cover. When the new Daredevil #1 came out from All New Marvel NOW last week (great book btw) I could have ordered up to qualify for all different types of variants. We instead chose to do this promotion which resonated more with us. (we do still love a good variant cover though.) Wait till you see the Iron Fist animal variant cover I had to carry in a few weeks. Oh Speaking of!!

iron fist

We also just got in four new boxes of hand picked 50% off graphic novels this week, including an entire box of Captain America books. (That might be a big deal nest week)
