New Comic Releases for 5-14-2014

Were finally getting back on track here at the shop. Were still working on the Free Comic Book Day thank you email to make sure everyone involved gets a proper shout out! But till then…

Here’s the hot new releases for the week of Wednesday, May 14th, 2014!

First up, it’s flash back time, as we all relive one of the greatest events in DC history in the Superman Doomed One Shot!

Superman_Doomed_1

Beginning the super-event you have been waiting for in The New 52: Superman vs. Doomsday in a way you’ve never seen before! And with Doomsday’s deadly new abilities, in this battle there can be no winners. The Man of Steel must unleash insane levels of power in order to do the job, only to terrify the world he’s saving. Beating Doomsday is only the beginning of this never ending battle!

Relive the battle that killed Superman the first time around in this $4.99 One Shot! The after effects of the fight will also be felt in Action Comics #31 and Superman Wonder Woman #8, also coming out this week!

This is also a big week for DC in the Action Figure world, with DC Comics Designer Series 1 Capullo Batman Action Figures!

Batman_AF

Finally, action figures based on Greg Capullo’s artwork from Scott Snyder’s run on Batman. Figures are $24.99 and include Batman, Nightwing, Riddler and Talon!

As if a New issue of Deadpool wasn’t enough this week, we’ve also got Deadpool Heroclix Booster Bricks!

Deadpool_28

Deadpool goes on his Honeymoon in Deadpool #28!

Deadpool_Heroclix!

Don’t know how to play heroclix? Maybe now’s the time to start! Heroclix are the only gaming system the shop carries because you also get random superhero miniatures when you buy booster packs. This shipment will be all Deadpool related characters!

Also at Marvel, a classic Marvel Character returns to his own series, with Deadly Hands Of Kung Fu #1!

MURDER! MYSTERY! MARTIAL ARTS!

A former lover of Shang-Chi’s is murdered in cold blood while working deep undercover for MI-6. When Shang-Chi travels to England to pay his respects he learns all is not as it seems, and if he’s not careful he may be next to die!

I love Shang-Chi and truly hope this book is all that it can be.

This week also marks the release of Image’s Manifest Destiny Volume One Graphic Novel!

manifest_destiny_volume_1

The first six issues of the series from Image’s Skybound Imprint for only $9.99! Think Lewis and Clark with monsters. Skybound is Robert Kirkman’s special imprint at Image comics, so his supervisory touches can definitely be felt in this work. A good book to try if you’ve digested all the Walking Dead’s. I also still highly recommend all fans of Walking Dead to try an issue of Stray Bullets! (Issue #3 even comes out this week) While it’s a different genre (1970’s crime noir) each issue is self contained while being part of a bigger whole and has the same tension and release that Walking Dead. This book is one of my favorite reads and is super creepy. (Not for kids!)

Finally, a new issue of Hellboy is in, Hellboy In Hell #6!

Hellboy-In-Hell 6

As always written and drawn my Mignola! The First Volume of the graphic novel even comes out this week too, reprinting issues #1-5!

Here’s you first warning about this year’s comic book heritage night at Great Lakes Brewing Company on Friday, May 30th from 6pm to 10pm

CBHN_Post_Card

Great Lakes Brewing Company and Carol & John’s Comic Shop present the 2nd annual Comic Book Heritage Night.

Your $20 ticket includes:

  • Light appetizers
  • A blank comic book cover you can have customized by one of 10 local artists (All artists that were sketching on Free Comic Book Day! You are guaranteed to get a custom cover at this event!)
  • Raffles for GLBC and Carol & John’s merchandise

We will tap Truth, Justice & the American Ale, our hoppy seasonable pale ale honoring Cleveland’s comic book heritage, along with our five Year-Round beers. (This is my favorite Great Lakes Beer!)

A limited edition pint glass will be available for purchase. Carol & John’s will also have a table of books and merchandise for sale. (Alot of people asked about the cool CNJ/Great Lakes pub glasses from the comic book beer paring! Here’s you chance to get one!)

Local artists include Derf, Rust Belt Monster Collective, and more.

We’ve even gotten DERF himself to come out and give a lecture about comic books and their place in Cleveland’s history. Two local guys, DERF and Bill Watterson, both won awards at the largest Comicon on the planet, the Angouleme in Paris. DERF for My Friend Dahmer, and Watterson won a lifetime achievement award for Calvin and Hobbes. http://www.cleveland.com/books/index.ssf/2014/02/bill_watterson_and_derf_backde.html

Having DERF out is a huge honor, and I personally really look forward to having a few beers, getting a sketch or two and listen to him speak. The Comic Book Beer Paring tickets sold out two weeks before the event, don’t be stuck on the outside again! We are always grateful to have support from Great Lakes! Please help us make this event a success so that it can grow each year!
