FCBD Recap and Civil War II

Free Comic Book Day is over and we’re finally getting settled into the regular pace of things. (Like our weekly email and Facebook Posts)

First off we have some thank you’s we’d like to throw out there.

THANK YOU

Thanks to our event photographers, Heather Campbell, Laura Wimbels and Graham Smith of Rubber City Cosplay.

Here’s Graham’s pictures from the photo booth on Friday Night:

_GWS4026The Rubber City Cosplay kids were a great addition to the event and added a lot of energy to the festivities.

You can find them here if you’d like to know more about what they’re up too:

Here’s Heather Campbell’s album from Friday as well:

FCBD2016-7515You can find her here.

The amazing Laura Wimbels pulled double duty and took pictures on both Friday and Saturday

We also got a little post event press from Scene Magazine and Cleveland.Com:

For the record, I was slightly misquoted there. My answer was Stan Lee, because nothing can kill Stan. Not even shark infested waters 100 miles from shore. He’s a survivor.

We’d also like to thank Sean and Kristen Burns from Breakneck Gallery for putting together a great pop up art show. They were another welcome new addition to the event. Here’s some of the artwork from the show

ryan file 1Thanks to all the artist who contributed and sketched at the event. Please do your civic duty and follow them on social media! We always keep a running contact list of the artists we work with here on our website.  Many do commissions so feel free to contact them for that.

We’d also like to thank the members of the Rust Belt Monster Collective for another fantastic mural.

RBMCThey have a gallery art show this Friday at the Popeye Gallery, as well as a book you can order here

VOLUNTEERS and HELP

I’d like to thank our amazing volunteers, Joe, Dan, Jenn, Kevin, Jason, Justin, Ashton, Mark, Josh and the last minute addition of Kelly. Thanks to out event bartender Macklin as well.

Thanks to our amazing staff of Jim, John Shearer, Ben, Jason and Kevin. 3,000 people come through a 1,900 square foot space in 24 hours and they make it happen.

Thanks to Jameson for the design work, really above and beyond at this point. (Jameson has moved on to the major leagues in town, and now works as a graphic designer for Great Lakes Brewing Company)

Thanks to John Woods for web design and for getting these emails out. (The mail must go through.)

Oh yeah. Thanks mom.

IMG_7104Mark your calendars everyone. Mom’s official last day will be Wednesday July 6th as she retires to the Halls of Valhalla. (and full time grand parenting.)

Lastly, thank to all your for the support but at this event and throughout the year!

UP COMING

Timed perfectly to coincide with the movie (and it is as great as everyone is saying) Civil War II #0 hits the shop this week!

Civil War II #0We got a sneak peak into the story with the Free Comic Book Day Special (if you didn’t get a copy, just ask at the counter on Wednesday. We have like 50 left.) but this is the first official issue. By the creative team behind the Marvel classics House of M and Siege, Brian Bendis and Oliver Coipel. This time the conflict is between Iron Man and Captain Marvel over the fate of the Inhuman’s place in the Marvel Universe.

DC’s new “revamped” Hanna-Barbera titles begin this week with Future Quest #1, which will combine Space Ghost, Johnny Quest, the Herculoids (my personal favorite) and even Birdman.

Future Quest #1Character designs are by the late and great Darwyn Cooke. Other titles to come include Scooby-Doo (next week actually), Wacky Raceland and the Flintstones.

Just a reminder that Preacher debuts on AMC this week on Sunday May 22nd.

Stop by the shop on Sunday before the show between noon and 5pm and we’ll give you a FREE reprint of the first issue of Preacher made especially for the day.

Preacher FreePreacher is a great story and highly recommended and collect into six graphic novels. Let’s hope they get it right!

Darwyn Cooke has passed away, and he was nothing less than a genius at age 53. He was our modern Kirby, Infantino and Kubert rolled into one.

DarwynI feel his passing, as I know he had much more to give, not just with artwork but in stories that would inspire me and change how I view things. No joke. DC New Frontier is one of the most important stories in my thirty plus years of selling comic books. I can go on forever about his work, but it’s best to just experience it for yourself if you haven’t already. This is not a sales pitch, this is a hope that you will take the time to delve into some material that will bring out the best in you.

  • DC The New Frontier Deluxe Hardcover (the classic)
  • DC Graphic Ink The DC Comics Art of Darwyn Cooke Hardcover (tons of short stories and material, including all the Jonah Hex stories)
  • Richard Stark’s Parker the Hunter Hardcover (Crime noir at it’s best. all four volumes are incredible)
  • Catwoman Trail of the Catwoman (Cooke redefined Catwoman and gave her her modern look.)

We’ll be getting in a special reorder of all his books, so please ask the staff to point out anything that seems interesting to you.

Johnny Cloud“But if you ask my brother they’ll set you straight. Johnny Cloud was a loser.” Godspeed Darwyn Cooke,
