Marvel, Mash-Up’s and Indie’s

We’re looking at the most exciting week of the second half of 2016. The return of Marvel NOW, some incredible mash-ups’ and a few new independents too.

FEATURED RELEASES

Here’s the featured new releases coming out this Wednesday, October 5th, 2016.

Historically Marvel have dominated the month of October since 2012 with the releases of it’s Marvel NOW titles. This year they’re going head to head with DC’s successful Rebirth titles, so the pressure is on them to deliver. Marvel’s next wave of new #1’s start this week!

The lead book is Champions, with the millennial heroes from the Avengers branching off into their own team after the fall out of Civil War II. Avengers writer Mark Waid will be writing this book as well, with art by Humberto Ramos.

now-champions-1It just gets better with Bendis returning to Jessica Jones in her first ongoing since the release of the Netflix series. Original artist Michael Gaydos will be returning as well.

now-jessica-jones-1Want more? How about a return to Luke Cage’s 70’s roots with a story by Genndy Tartakovsky the award-winning creator of Dexter’s Laboratory, Samurai Jack, and Hotel Transylvania!  Looking at this book, I know I screwed up and didn’t order enough. I mean Cage even came out this week.

now-cage-1Other Marvel NOW titles include Deadpool and the Merc’s for Money #4 and Doctor Strange #12, both starting points for new storylines.

MASH-UPS

This week we’ve got a bunch of mash-ups of characters that would never meet if it wasn’t for the amazing world of comic books!

The spotlight grabber is the Archie Meets Ramones One Shot.

archie-ramonesArchie’s band tanks at the battle of the bands, so they’re spirited into the past to learn how to rock from arguably the greatest rock band of all time. (The Ramones were the second concert I ever went to in my life, when I was eleven years old.)

Jack Burton meets Snake Plissken in Big Trouble in Little China / Escape from New York #1.

big-trouble-escapeYou’ll get double the mullets and double the Russell in this six issue mini series completely approved by John Carpenter.

Get your action figures out, the Masters of the Universe meet the Thundercats in the new He-man / Thundercats mini-series from DC Comics.

he-man-thundercats-1Ash even meets Xena this week in Army Of Darkness / Xena Forever and a Day #1.

INDIE A GO_GO

On the indie side, we’ve got some great new series coming out by some of the top talent in the industry.

Image Comics’ Moonshine #1 reunites Brain Azzarello and Eduardo Risso, the creative team behind the epic 100 Bullets from Vertigo.

moonshine-1New York City gangsters, back woods moonshiners and a little bit of the supernatural. Frank Miller even gave his blessing to the title by doing a variant cover.

I’m really looking forward to the first Image title by Max Landis, writer of the super successful Superman American Alien mini series.

green-valley-1The title concerns a disgraced group of four knights, once close friends, which is given one last shot at redemption: kill a wizard, and slay his dragons. But there’s no such thing as wizards, dragons don’t exist, and nothing is as it seems in the town of Green Valley.

Aftershock’s Comics has Warren Ellis on Shipwreck #1.

shipwreck-1Dr Jonathan Shipwright, sole survivor of a very unusual and very secret shipwreck, doesn’t know where he is. Seemingly trapped on an endless road, in pursuit of a saboteur who holds the key to his salvation — or doom.

Other cool indies this week include Black #1 from Black Mask Comics and Shade the Changing Girl #1 from DC’s Young Animal line. (sure it’s DC, but Doom Patrol was a great indie start to this imprint.)

As always thank for tuning in! We’ll see you this week at the shop!
