Featured New Releases for 10-9-2019

It’s a spectacular week of new releases, with DC finally shining with some titles to tie into the release of the Joker this past weekend.

Here’s the featured new releases coming out this Wednesday, October 9th, 2019.

Out first book is a Joker Year of the Villain one-shot written by legendary director John Carpenter! (The Thing, Halloween, Escape From New York)

This is likely our number one stand-alone pick for people looking for a quick Joker story.

If you’re in it for the long haul, Joker and Harley Criminal Insanity is a new nine-issue Black Label mini-series.

“Written by #1 New York Times bestselling author Kami Garcia, JOKER/HARLEY: CRIMINAL SANITY introduces readers to a Joker and Harley Quinn unlike any they’ve seen before, utilizing forensic psychiatry, behavior analysis (profiling) and psychological profiles to create a true-to-life take on these iconic characters that is more terrifying than any psychotic fantasy.” Fun.

The dream team of Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch also kick off a twelve-issue Batman maxi-series with Batman’s Grave #1.

Batman tries to inhabit the mind of a corpse to solve a crime. It’s a simple description, but these two creators have given us some pretty epic tales over the years.

DC Superhero Girls is nothing new, but they have recently been revamped and the new format is akin to the tempo of Power Puff Girls. It’s a lot more modern and fun. This week is the first original graphic novel in that format.

Over at Marvel, Absolute Carnage continues with two new crossovers, Amazing Spider-Man #31 and Absolute Carnage Miles Morales #3.

Doctor Doom finally gets his own ongoing title.

Indie writer Christopher Cantwell strips Doom down, removing his country, his allies, and putting him on the run as the world’s most wanted villain.

This week is also the finale of Powers of X, which is also the finale of his whole House and Powers storyline. It’s a red highlighted book on Hickman’s map, which means it’ll be an important issue to the overall storyline. This has been a phenomenal run.

Want to know more about what went on? Stop into our book club this Thursday at 8:15 pm and I’ll be reviewing the entire run with co-host Valentino Luca Zullo, as well as asking some questions to the audience like…

  1. Where do allies fall in this new mutant utopia? (Should all humans be completely excluded from this new vision?)
  2. Whose voice rings true and whose does not? (Lots of mutants are in-character, but some don’t sound quite right.)
  3. Does any of this new history have major conflicts with established continuity?
  4. What the heck is going on in X3, 1,000 years in the future?
  5. How do the visions of Magneto and Apocalypse vary in this new utopia?
  6. Do you have a favorite scene or moment that we may not have covered?
  7. What are the ethics of the data collection going on on both sides?

We’ll try to get through as many as we can before shutting down at 9:30.

We’ll also have a raffle for some cool x-prizes at the end.

This is our first book club and if it goes well we’ll be looking at doing some more! Stop in and watch me babble like a kid about comic books.

In the world of small press, Todd McFarlane is milking Spawn even more by getting the Guinness World Record for longest-running creator-owned superhero comic book with Spawn #301. He’ll be writing, penciling and inking the book with others. Lots of covers too.

If you’re a Buffy fan, BOOM! Studios is doing their first Buffy/Angel crossover with Hellmouth #1 this week.

The story will jump back and forth between both titles and this mini-series. It’ll be good to see these two characters actually together again.

Finally, mark your calendar for Halloween Comic Fest this year on Saturday, October 26th.

Free Comics, Candy, and we’ve confirmed Laura Wimbels will be coming out and taking free pictures again this year. (expect some other surprises too!)

That’s it! See you this week at the shop!
