MARVEL COMICS

The Age of Monsters has begun in this new Hulk series from writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson and artist Nic Klein. There are some awesome horror images here, with elder creatures ripping through human bodies, and a grotesque Banner to Hulk transformation. Hulk wants to take control of Banner’s body permanently, while the Mother of Horrors turns every monster in the Marvel Universe against Bruce and the Hulk. I am ready to see more of these creatures and, hopefully, some monster fights.

Agatha Harkness has decided to educate Wanda on the dangers of her recent absorption of Chthon and the destruction of the Darkhold, but what are Agatha’s true intentions? This Contest of Chaos prelude from writer Steve Orlando and artist Carlos Nieto sets off events that will continue in the Spider-Man Annual, and ripple through the Marvel Universe in the eight Annuals in August and September!

Spider-Boy returns in Edge of Spider-Verse #3! He knows where he is, New York, and who his enemies are, but no one knows who he is. Not even Aunt May. But his spider-sense connects him with a girl from the F.E.A.S.T. shelter and now he has to help her escape from The Inner Demons. Written by Dan Slott with art by Humberto Ramos. The second story features Spider-Smasher, Miles Morales’s sister Billie. Someone is stealing food and medical supplies from her neighborhood, and Black Cat needs her help to track down who is behind it. Written by David Betancourt and drawn by Julian Shaw.

DC COMICS

This landmark issue concludes the Whatever Happened to the Warrior of Truth story, featuring a multitude of creative talent; writers Becky Cloonan and Michael W. Conrad, and artists Joelle Jones, Alitha Martinez, Mark Morales, Nick Robles, Todd Nauck, Skylar Patridge, Cully Hammer, and Jen Bartel! Diana finds herself in the dreams of important people from her life as the Oracles watch over her. Her life as Wonder Woman hangs in the balance. Will she find the answers she seeks in her visions? Will she still be Amazon’s greatest champion? And the second story from Tom King and Daniel Sampere, Trinity, sets up what’s to come in the new Wonder Woman #1!

SMALL PRESS COMICS

It’s time for another Chilling Adventure! This time we have three stories set at Camp Pickens from writers Jordan Morris, Blake Howard, and Tim Seeley, with art by Diana Camero, Carola Borelli, and Mike Norton. Camp Pickens is cursed, and the only thing keeping evil away is the “bug juice.” When they run out, Jughead has to lead a team of kids to find more. Reggie tells spooky stories, Betty disappears, and a mysterious figure with a fire shovel is snatching up counselors, you know, the usual summer camp activities.

A new mini-series set in the Bone Orchard Mythos from Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino, Tenement is an existential horror tale set in an apartment tower. Seven residents are tied together in ways none of them know, except for maybe Felix, the narrator. There are dark secrets, a death that may not be natural, and a young boy who sees more than he says. Maybe a little bit Candyman, and a little bit Argento’s Inferno, we’ll see where this story takes us.

A new split book with the mystery story, Les Mort 13, from T.P. Louise and Ashley Wood, and Dreamweaver, following an aging adventurer, from Chris Ryall and Nelson Daniel. Les Mort 13 takes place on the sinister, windy island of Southport sitting “between the coasts of somewhere and nowhere”, a sanctuary for robot refugees. It’s an odd tale. The second story finds Cutler Carlton, aka Dreamweaver, and his conscience, Speck, on a docked ship trying to stop a portal from being opened. But Cutler is not as spry as he once was and things do not go smoothly in this more humorous tale. There is also a “Pear Interlude” which, like all mentions of pears, makes me think of the Kids In The Hall “I had the pear dream again” sketch.
