Andrea’s Hellfire Picks for 07.26.2023

Happy Christmas in July, Comic Shop Friends! July Santa brought you… a table full of new comics!

First, a huge thank you to everyone who came out last Friday and Saturday for Dave Michelinie’s events. Thanks to you we were able to donate $3500 to PurringPals!

Dave posted this wonderful message.

No big events in August, but our next signing will be September 23rd, with Phillip Kennedy Johnson, writer of the great new Incredible Hulk! Issue #2 is out this week, and we stocked up on issue #1, so make sure you pick one up.

Then we have a bunch of awesome things happening in October, and I’m not just talking about Halloween. Mark Waid, Sina Grace, and Sarah Kuhn will all be here! More details to come on those!

MARVEL COMICS

The second issue is just as good as the first. Like Hulk? Like horror? Like zombies and creepy songs? Get this book!

The Fall of X starts here! It’s time for the annual Hellfire Gala, where mutants and humans come together to party and learn what new mutant innovations are coming. A new X team is voted in, a “Classified” story is revealed, and the stuff hits the fan when Orchis shows up. To steal the tagline from Texas Chainsaw Massacre, “Who will survive and what will be left of them?” Written by Gerry Duggan, with art by Adam Kubert, Luciano Vecchio, Matteo Lolli, Russell Dauterman, Javier Pina, R.B. Silva, Joshua Cassara, Kris Anka, and Pepe Larraz.

What if Gwen Stacy didn’t die on the bridge? But Spider-Man did! Many a person is shaped by the memory of their darkest day, and Gwen’s life changes completely when she learns Peter Parker was Spider-Man, and vows vengeance on Green Goblin. Written by Gerry Conway and Jody Houser, with art by Ramon F. Bachs.

DC COMICS

Writer Mark Waid (He’ll be in the shop on October 13th!) and artist Bryan Hitch tell the tale of the last days of Lex Luthor. Luthor wants Superman to help him find a cure for the illness causing his rapid decline, and in front of the whole world, Superman agrees. Is it his vow to help anyone who needs it? Or is there something in Clark Kent’s past that compels him to want to save the person that spent their life trying to destroy him?

Another week, another batch of Knight Terrors! This week we have Knight Terrors #2, Action Comics #1 (One part Power Girl and one part Cyborg Superman! Run, little meat-sacks!), Angel Breaker #1(Set partially in Erie County!), Detective Comics #1 (It’s snowing in July in Gotham.), Harley Quinn #1 (Harley wears otter boxers! And travels the Multiverse!), and Titans #1 (“All that I am… All that I am.”).

The best of these is Detective Comics. Super dark, super creepy, and great Jim Gordon stuff.

SMALL PRESS

“There is something ancient and terrible loose in the world of men. Something that hates them with a burning passion, that bears a grudge born of ten thousand years. Something that wants its revenge.” I’m not one for cop dramas, but I am one for women’s revenge. A young woman who was rescued from a serial killer is now dead. Detective Amy Sun feels the SWAT team leader is responsible but soon discovers there is something else that feels the same. The Ribbon Queen is out for the blood of the guilty, and Detective Sun is not certain that she should be stopped. From Garth Ennis and artist Jacen Burrows.

Demonic cats? Astral Projection? Mother and daughter killing team? Cursed music? Mirka Andolfo and Laura Braga’s new Image series starts with a bunch of mysteries and secrets. There is no escaping the mewing evil!
