Andrea’s Catacomb of Picks for 07.16.2025

Hi Comic Shop Friends! How about that Superman movie? I’ve got a new crush, and it’s Clark Kent! But we’re not here to talk about that, you all want to hear about comics!

Our big ‘NOT-AT-COMICON’ Sale is right around the corner! Everyone left behind gets to enjoy one of our biggest sales of the year!

From Thursday, July 24th through Sunday the 27th, we’ll have 50% off ALL back issues including the wall! We’ll have 10% off everything else in the shop, including supplies, which are rarely on sale. We will also fill the foyer with dollar stock, everything we’ve got, and make them 50 cents each for a hundred or more. We’ve got some really great stuff in inventory right now, so make the most of this opportunity.

A reminder that there is no Late Nite Comics this month, this sale takes the place of that. Thank you as always for your support!

On August 3rd from 10am to 4pm we’ll be set up at NeoCon. John said this will likely be the only show the shop will be at this year, so stop out and see us there!

The Genghis Con Drawing Club will be here during August’s Late Nite Comics, Thursday the 21st from 7pm to 10pm! Dig through some dollar books and then do some drawing!

MARVEL COMICS

Man, Phillip Kennedy Johnson is good at writing monster stories. Those of us who are enjoying his Incredible Hulk run know, now the rest of you can get a taste in his Bring on the Bad Guys Abomination one-shot with artist Sergio Davila. Locked in a Wakandan prison, Emil Blonsky is offered a deal, and he’s not one to turn down a good deal. Especially if it means his release. An ancient unknown well has been uncovered outside of an archeological dig site, and those who investigate go missing. “How big is it?” Blonsky knows he’s not being asked to check it out if it was something that anyone else could handle. And he knows more than he’s letting on… and may have another deal lined up… Grab this if you want a good single issue character story. I like how this “mini-series” is connecting a main story in a different way, with character driven one-shots.

Now that the Godzilla Vs one-shots are over, it’s time for the King of the Monsters to take on the entire Marvel Universe! “Mole Man had long dreamed of destroying the surface world… and now he may get his terrible wish.” Unearthing Vibranium under New York, Mole Man has inadvertently awoken both a Celestial and Godzilla! Now New York’s heroes must stop the kaiju’s rampage. Marvel’s First Family is first on the scene, and let me tell you there are some reactions to the destruction that are both amusing, and drive home how terrible it would be to witness Godzilla’s might! Calling in the Avengers for assistance, the Fantastic Four know it will take everything they’ve got to stop Godzilla, but how do you stop the unstoppable? Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are no match for the literal earth-shattering force of nature. Gerry Duggan and Javier Garron are actually destroying the Marvel Universe in this epic five issue mini-series!

DC COMICS

You thought you knew how hardcore and how prepared Batman was… You have no idea… Trapped in Ark M, Bruce is now Subject 29. What does the Ark M Project have planned for him? Can he escape? Can he save Waylon? This is a hell of an issue, I said “Oh, $#!+” multiple times while reading. There are a ton of hints at characters we may see in the future that are going to expand the Absolute Batman universe.

I do enjoy how Lemire and Kaplan are building the relationship with Wally and Grood, as Wally is slowly learning what his abilities are. Dealing with these new powers, while dealing with anxiety, and being on his own, on the run is wearing on him. It’s nice to have someone who understands, and moving into the teen home gives him some stability, but when it’s threatened by Heat Wave, Wally will have to become a hero to save his new friends.

Mouse Man knows. Mouse Man knows! Mice have ears, Mouse Man knows… Welcome to the Island of Mice and Men! The new story arc starts with Diana going against the decision of the Justice League and entering the isolated Moray Island. Learning someone she is searching for is on the island, the consequences are not something she is concerned with. She should be, as the refugee island is overrun, and run, by mice and foul tyrant. Mouse Man KNOWS!

SMALL PRESS COMICS

Humanity has survived a monstrous threat in the form of a being called Cinder, and a decade later people still tell tale of the final battle between Cinder and their savior, Bataar. With offerings given regularly to Bataar to honor his glory, and controllers patrolling for threats, it seems that the world has become better. But not for everyone. Loloi runs her own food truck and moves from town to town selling her delicious ghost pepper infused treats. But staying one step ahead of her competition becomes more difficult when a mysterious near-silent stranger, and his talkative friend, visit her truck. Just wanting to eat a meal in peace, Ash is a former warrior whose secrets may undo what humanity believes happened ten years ago. Now hiding out in Loloi’s food truck, they’re all on the run. The things one will do for a good meal, huh? Creator Ludo Lullabi mixes post-apocalypse with fantasy and sci-fi in a manga-like style.

It’s the bloody kick off of three interconnected tales of revenge in Las Vegas from Gerry Duggan and Jae Lee! The first issue follows sisters Anna and Katie in town to celebrate Katie’s twenty-first birthday. The celebration ends early, as they’re soon targeted by assassins. A deep family secret is about to come to light, as Anna explains the true meaning of the “family trust.” Fighting for their lives against a never-ending supply of killers, the sisters are slicing off limbs and heads and causing chaos across the city, and, one way or another, “This ends tonight.” With the truth revealed. Or is it?

The Summer of Fear is here! The newest ongoing EC horror anthology begins! Enter the Catacomb of Torment if you dare, and partake of three original horror tales and one classic EC story from Shock SuspenStories by William M. Gaines, Al Feldstein, and Graham Ingels!

Learn “What’s the Deal with VooDoo?” in John Arcudi and Patrick Piazzalunga’s tale of a washed-up stand-up comic with a racist setlist meeting a couple of college students.

Marguerite Bennett and Dan McDaid teach tourists a lesson on whose land this is in “Quintana Roo”!

This is not your “Garden Variety” dinner party in Matt Kindt and David Lapham’s fungi filled story of a chef who uses a secret process and preparation to delight the tastebuds of his guests.

The classic 1952 story, “Halloween”, teaches us the lesson that no one should come between children and their enjoyment of the best holiday!

If you can survive the brutality, The Tormentor will return next month with more to lure you even deeper into the Catacomb of Torment!
