Secret Wars

Four new Secret Wars titles come out this week including Civil War #1!

Civil War 1Charles Soule (Death of Wolverine) and Leinil Francis Yu return to Civil War in a battlezone where the conflict between Captain America and Iron Man has been going on for over six years. We think this book will be on par with Old Man Logan.

Age of ApoclyseIn Age of Apocalypse #1, we return to one of the biggest crossovers in X-Men history and a battlezone where Apocalypse reigns supreme.

Spider Island 1Because you can never have enough Spider-Man, we revisit the time when everyone was a spider hero.

1872 1The one I’m personally looking forward to is 1872 #1. Captain America is Sheriff, Tony Stark is the town drunk, and a stranger comes to town with a haunted (green) past. What can I say? I love Westerns.

Also from Marvel this week is Lando #1!

Star Wars Lando 1If there was one guy you’d want to read more about in the Star Wars Universe it would be Lando. Learn his pre Cloud City backstory in this five issue mini series. By Charles Soule (that’s two books this week) and Alex Maleev, who’s artwork is always on point.

DC & Indies

Archie gets the biggest reboot of his career in Archie #1.

Archie 1 StaplesArchie had the highest running count in comics, so a relaunch really is a big deal here. Throw in a story by Mark Waid and art work by Saga’s Fiona Staples and you got a winner. There will even by 22 different covers by different artists. Both Waid and Staples are self confessed Archie fans, and we’re excited to see their take on the book. Especially Fiona’s artwork.

Want to be challenged this week? We recommend Strange Fruit #1 by Mark Waid (two books for him this week as well) and JG Jones.

Strange Fruit 1It’s 1927 in the town of Chatterlee, Mississippi, drowned by heavy rains. The Mississippi River is rising, threatening to break open not only the levees, but also the racial and social divisions of this former plantation town. A fiery messenger from the skies heralds the appearance of a being, one that will rip open the tensions in Chatterlee. Savior, or threat? It depends on where you stand. All the while, the waters are still rapidly rising… Strange Fruit is a challenging, provocative examination of the heroic myth confronting the themes of racism, cultural legacy, and human nature  through a literary lens, John Steinbeck’s classic novel, Of Mice and Men.”

Just for fun, we’ve got Star Trek Green Lantern #1.

Star Trek Green Lantern 1Exactly what you’d expect, as the original crew comes head to head with Hal in this six issue mini!

Superhero Boot Camp

Finally, this past week we provided an assist to BAYarts and helped to put together a three day Superhero Boot Camp. 48 kids designed their own logo’s, made capes, shields and hammers and hit our super hero obstacle course.

Congrats to these fine heroes and heroines, and a big thank you to instructors Ryan Finley, Angela Oster, Randy Crider, Jim Giar and Jessica Ramage. Thanks also to BAYarts and Erin Stack for this amazing opportunity.

It was a highlight of my summer to see them out there.
