Andrea’s Recs for 09.21.2022
Hey Comic Shop Friends! First, a few little updates for the shop, and then we’ll get into the new books!
This Wednesday, the 22nd is Late Nite Comics! We’ll be bringing out a bunch of new dollar stock (Marvel, DC, and Small Press) from 8 pm to midnight, and starting at noon, when we open all back issues will be 50% off in honor of John’s birthday. That includes the Celebrezze Collection boxes and the back issue wall! So you’ll have twelve hours to shop that 50% off! Come hang out and celebrate John’s birthday with us.
If you know anything about me, you know I love Halloween, so I’m psyched that Halloween ComicsFest is coming up on October 30th! We’ll have some free books, and candy, and of course, costumes are encouraged!
One last thing, we are STOCKED up on action figures, so start your holiday shopping early!
MARVEL
Edge of Spider-Verse #4 has four new Spider stories with Spider-Ham, Spinstress, Spider-Mobile, and Sun-Spider! Sun-Spider debuted in the 2020s Spider-Verse miniseries as a winner of Marvel’s Spidersona contest and got her own story in this issue. The Spinstress has a Disney Princess-esque tale, and “like a forgotten slice of ham that’s fallen beneath the deli counter”, Spider-Ham has gone bad. There’s also the first appearance of Pete Spiderman! This is my favorite issue of this series so far. Stories by Jordan Blum, David Hein, Dan Slott, and Tee Franklin, and art by Michael Shelfer, Luciano Vecchio, Ty Templeton, and Jethro Morales.
At first, I thought, “Another X book? What the heck is this X-Terminators?”, but then I read the description and was sold. Enter the Grindhouse of X! Dazzler just wants a girl’s night with Jubilee and Boom-Boom after her breakup, but things take a turn when they’re drugged and put in death traps. A women’s revenge exploitation film in the X-Men Universe from Leah Williams and Carlos Gomez. Lots of blood and swears in this one!
DC
This week DC gives us the second in a series of Batman villain one-shots, One Bad Day: Two-Face, written by Mariko Tamaki, and art by Javier Fernandez. Harvey Dent is seemingly free from Two-Face’s influence and is asked to become Gotham City’s D.A. again. When his father’s life is threatened on his 88th birthday, Harvey turns to Batman for help, but will Two-Face crash the party?
The Titans are back in Titans United: Bloodpact #1, a six-issue miniseries from Cavan Scott and Lucas Meyer. Tim Drake wakes unsure of where he is and out of costume. The last thing he was doing was fighting the Fearsome Five, alongside Nightwing, Superboy, Starfire, Beast Boy, and Donna Troy. But where was Raven and what is her connection to the Bloodstone? A blood sacrifice is coming that will change the Titans’ world.
It’s Harley Quinn’s 30th, and she’s got a 100-page Super Spectacular written by Amanda Conner, Jimmy Palmiotti, Paul Dini, Stephanie Phillips, Stjepan Sejic, Sam Humphries, Kami Garcia, Rob Williams, Mindy Lee, Terry Dodson, Cecil Castellucci, and Rafael Scavone, with art by Chad Hardin, Guillem March, Riley Rossmo, Stjepan Sejic, Erica Henderson, Jason Badower, Mico Suayan, John Timms, Terry Dodson, Rachel Dodson, Dan Hipp, and Rafael Albuquerque! There are ten stories here, full of Gotham’s villains and heroes! Harley teams up with Alfred to stop a break-in at Wayne Manor! Harley teaches a troop of Gotham Gals a lesson in life skills! There’s so much here I didn’t have time to read it all!
SMALL PRESS
Welcome Ghouls and Boils to the Small Press Recommendations, full of frights for fans of Fear Street and EC Comics!
A feast for your famished eyes! Creepshow #1 (of 5), based on the Shudder original series, brings us tales of suspense and horror in this anthology, featuring different creative teams and standalone stories in each issue. #1’s creators are Chris Burnham on “Take One”, Paul Dini, Stephen Langford, and John McCrea on “Shingo”. The first story has Trick ‘R Treat vibes and lots of gore. The second asks who the real monster is, when a creature is booked for a birthday party. Finally, a real Creepshow comic book!
R.L. Stine is back with Stuff of Nightmares, a four-issue miniseries from Boom! The Nightmare Keeper welcomes us into his Cabinet of Curiosities for a tale of The Monster Makers. A reimagining of the classic Frankenstein story, where two brothers are hell-bent on creating life. But after creating life, they also create death! Which path will they follow? Lots of blood in this book too! And there’s a variant cover by original Goosebumps artist Tim Jacobus!
Not horror, but still lots of blood in this new Image #1, Vanish, created by Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman. A new take on a hero’s quest, this is a brutal fantasy/superhero book. Oliver Harrison was the Chosen One as a child and destroyed the greatest threat to his realm. As an adult, he self-medicates with various drugs and alcohol to hide from his horrific nightmares and madness. When a superhero team called the Prestige shows up, he decides to embrace his magical side again, but is it for better or for worse?
Also, this week:
There’s #2 of Star Wars Hyperspace Stories, the all-ages comic from Dark Horse. Luke and Leia investigate a world that could be useful as a new base, but things don’t go as planned in this issue from Cecil Castellucci and Megan Huang. We still have issue #1 in stock, but each issue is a standalone story, so you can jump in anytime.
Chilling Adventures Presents: Weirder Mysteries #1 is more spooky stuff from Riverdale in a one-shot anthology that is part X-Files, part Black Mirror.
There are 100 copies of the Frank Miller Presents Ashcan hitting the table tomorrow, too, if you’d buy that for a dollar!
