Andrea’s Roxxin’ Picks for 04.17.2024

Hi Comic Shop Friends! Three weeks until Free Comic Book Day! But before we get to that, here’s what’s happening the rest of April:

First: This Thursday the 18th is Late Nite Comics! Open ‘til midnight! So, so, so many dollar books!  But, just announced! All dollar stock will be 50 cents each! Buy one, 50 cents! Buy two, 50 cents each! Buy 100, 50 cents each! Buy 500, 50 cents each! 50% off back issues! If you missed picking up any back issues during our sale last weekend, now’s your chance!

Second: Saturday, April 20th is Sonic the Hedgehog Day! Judging from people’s responses to the little display on the counter, it’ll be a great time. Lots of excited Sonic fans!

12 pm to 2pm! This is the first shop event John’s daughter Luna is hosting, so come out and show your support for her Sonic fandom!

Then: May the 4th be with you! (And also with you.) Free Comic Book Day is Saturday, May 4th! Keep an eye out for a FCBD info email this week! Prints are in store now, and are free with any purchase. If you know a place to hang one to help us promote the event, let us know, and we will be happy to give you another.

Also, last Saturday was my first time going to FanExpo Cleveland, and it was a great time! I got to meet Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd, my faves from Lord of the Rings. Dom asked me about my Carol & John’s shirt, and I gave Billy a Winston sticker, so I’m spreading the comic shop love into the Shire.

I saw a few of the shop’s regulars too, so I hope you all had an awesome time too! I hope you got to see Missty’s Mystique cosplay on Saturday, or her Rogue cosplay on Sunday because she looked amazing!

Unfortunately, I didn’t get to read the new books this week, since I’m out sick, so you’ll have to make do with the publishers solicitations on most of these.

MARVEL COMICS

From current Incredible Hulk writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson and artist Andrea Broccardo, the only way to contain the Hulk is in a Giant-size story! Riding the rails is no walk in the park, especially for the Incredible Hulk! And particularly when something – no, someONE has been stolen from him by a gruesome new threat with evil machinations in mind. Clear the tracks! The Hulk is coming through! Plus, a reprinting of Incredible Hulk #372 by Peter David and Dale Keown, featuring high-speed action and heartrending drama in a Hulk tale for the ages.

From the pages of Immortal Thor, the Roxxon Age begins from Al Ewing and Greg Land! In his secret identity as A.I. spokesguru Chad Hammer, the son of Odin knows Mama Gaea is a top priority for heroes AND for business! But when a group of insane environmental activists take “saving the Earth” too far, it’s time to show them the wisdom on both sides – as Thor! But which God of Evil is prompting the kids to rebel? Could it be…Loki, God of Evil? Featuring an all-star cast of heroes! Minotaur! Executioner! Enchantress! And the Thor-Truck! This is the story of The Roxxin’ Thor… and it’s a vital part of the “Absolute Absolution” mega-event!

DC COMICS

Yes, once again, I am telling you to read Wonder Woman. This book continues its streak of amazing issues, and I’ll keep putting it in this newsletter until the quality drops. I’ve seen some of you drop Wonder Woman recently, and it makes me doubt if we can be friends. (Just kidding. [But maybe not.] I don’t judge what anyone is reading, I just want you to be reading great comics! Including this one!)

The other DC title I think most people are sleeping on, is Batman Off-World. Jason Aaron is writing a fun Batman in space book, with punch-bots! Bruce goes to space to train, and learn how to defeat a specific alien who he has a run-in with in Gotham. In the process, he makes it his mission to stop orphans from being kidnapped across the galaxy. Really, don’t you want to see Batman in space?!?

SMALL PRESS COMICS

Unyielding wildlife photographer Brynne Brautigan, isolated in the remote cold of Baffin Island, sees something she can’t unsee. An argument, followed by an outburst of intense violence between two nearby climbers-did she just witness a murder? In a frantic search for the truth, Brynne discovers just what she’s looking for, but little does she know that more than the silent white of winter is keeping her company… Writer Zac Thompson and artist Nicola Izzo team up for this neo-noir crime thriller rife with murder and paranoia, in the tradition of Fargo and Rear Window!

From creators Scott Snyder and Jamal Igle comes this rollicking sci-fi adventure story about a boy, his dog, and a machine that controls time and space! What could go wrong? Have you ever wondered why all the great figures in history had a pet companion, and if they were all running from the same mysterious threat? Such questions have never crossed the mind of Dudley Datson, a fifteen-year-old with a penchant for invention. But when dastardly foes turn his world upside down, Dudley is going to have to start facing things beyond his wildest imagination in this modern day fable.
