Andrea’s Destruction Picks for 05.06.2026

Hi Comic Shop Friends! Thank you all for a successful Free Comic Book Day! This was the shop’s 25th FCBD, and every year gets smoother and better. This was our best one yet! I think we’re a pretty well-oiled (and well-caffeinated!) team and that makes the day flow. Thank you to each and every one of you who showed up and supported the shop, the local artists and vendors, David Michelinie and Purring Pals, and made the day awesome!

Not pictured are Alex who was handling Michelinie, and Laura, who was taking the photos, but that’s thirteen people hosting an event of thousands!

Through your donations, the VIP event and the signatures on the day, we were able to help David Michelinie raise $7,410 for Purring Pals Cat Rescue in his home state of Delaware. Awesome job, Cleveland! Winston approves!

Thanks to the Rust Belt Monster Collective for the sweet new mural! I personally love the addition of the Spider-Man ice cream.

We also have to thank Sam and Maddy from Sonny Boy Comics for filming both the Michelinie Q&A, which you can watch over on YouTube, and the entire Free Comic Book Day! There is a short highlight video up on @sonnyboycomics Instagram, and Sam is planning a full vlog video soon!

Thursday, May 21st is Late Nite Comics! 8pm to 11pm! All dollar books will be only 50 cents each! No qualifiers, so that means one book is 50 cents, 100 books are $50! 50% off back issues! And we’re doing an omnibus raffle like we used to do on Black Friday! For every $10 you spend you’ll get a raffle ticket, and we’re pulling winners every half hour! We’ll have more details closer to Late Nite, but now there’s even more great reasons to come out this month!

This month, both Ben and John Dudas will be co-hosting Midnight Rental at the Grog Shop with Laura! 8pm on Wednesday, May 20th! What will the secret surprise film be?  What will Ben and John have to say about it?! Show up and find out!

MARVEL COMICS

Marvel is celebrating the 20th anniversary of Civil War by telling five all-new unseen stories set before, during, and after the event. First up, from Christos Gage and Edgar Salazar, Iron Man! Bishop knows what the world would be like if the Superhuman Registration Act doesn’t work. Taking Tony Stark into the Days of Future Past, Bishop shows him the consequences of Project Wideawake. The revelation of the apocalyptic future changes everything Tony thought he knew about the consequences of registration, and sets him on his path. Next, what led to Spider-Man’s decision to reveal his identity!

Jubilee’s long-lost cousin shows up at Haven House, and asks for her help finding his mother. Auntie Hope has gone missing, and as they search for her, Jubilee finds that her familial bonds aren’t as strong as she would hope, but dang, those family secrets run deep! What is Eason Cheung’s secret? And what has put a strain on the relationship between him and his mother? Find out in this Marvel Voices one-shot celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, written by Gene Luen Yang, with art by Michael YG. Featuring a conversation with Gene Luen Yang!

DC COMICS

Gerry Duggan and Matteo Lolli present a one-shot of the best and the worst Green Lantern in the Corps: Guy Gardner! Guy is convinced that something is going on with the decommissioned Manhunter androids, and he’s going to fight whoever he has to, to get to the bottom of it! Space apes! Internal Affairs! Even John Stewart! He may be paranoid, but he may not be entirely wrong. A fun story with heart, friendship, and punching and elbows to the groin!

If the Green Lantern is a weapon, what’s the ammunition? Jo and Hal find themselves in the Green Lantern, and are reunited with John Stewart and Guy Gardner. As they speed across the universe directly to Mogo and the Blackstars, Tomar Re’s past is revealed, as are his intentions with the other Lanterns. On Earth, Hammond’s forces close in on Simon and Cam, as they try to save Todd Rice. None of them are ready for what they’re about to face, as Al Ewing and Sid Kotian set the stakes even higher.

The first full debut of Absolute Steel! He’s on a mission, but that’s all about to change after King Shazam is released! It’s not clear if Steel is Superman’s friend or foe, especially as he seeks revenge. But King Shazam’s power is unlike anything Superman has faced before, and the King is set on vengeance on those who had imprisoned him. Jason Aaron and Rafa Sandoval are taking this next year of Absolute Superman to a new level, and this issue is fight after fight after fight, and it is amazing.

SMALL PRESS COMICS

I’ve been looking forward to this series since we got to read a preview, and it did not disappoint! Writer Matthew Rosenberg has teamed up with his brother Mark Elijah Rosenberg to write a sci-fi adventure tale of robots and humanity, with artist Andy MacDonald. Humans are extinct, but the robots who once helped us still remain. They continue to do their work without human interference, driving buses, making breakfast, but getting scrapped if they malfunction. There is one robot who is an outcast, humanoid Abraham Lincoln. Every day he makes his speech. Every day the other robots mock him. He believes there must be something more, that they must have some other purpose, and he wonders what’s beyond the walls. After nearly getting killed, he becomes determined to wander the Earth until he can find whatever it is, or get scrapped in the process. It’s a story about finding purpose, finding hope, and really lonely robots. The first issue is oversized at only $4.99, and is well worth reading.

She-Spawn gets her own five issue mini-series from Gail Simone and Ig Guara! Jessica Priest has been a soldier, an assassin, a superhero, and a mother. She’s hit a wall after the death of a child abducted by the D.O.A.  The Scorched have been a team, but Jessica decides to go off on her own to deal with P.T.S.D. Her quiet cabin getaway turns out to be anything but, when someone shows up and asks for her help rescuing another kid from a cult. Now, she has to take on the role of savior to protect a small child from an Angelic Cult set on sacrificing him in the name of their God. There’s a little that seems like a continuation from other series, but not a bad issue to jump into the Spawn Universe, especially with Gail Simone writing, and the reveal at the end!

If you missed the FCBD version of the Energon Universe 2026 Special, now’s your chance to get it! As the Energon Universe enters its fourth year, they’ve put together a preview of things to come in G.I. Joe, Void Rivals, Transformers, and the new M.A.S.K. series! Dan Watters and Pye Parr present a preview of M.A.S.K. Robert Kirkman and Jason Howard do the Transformers story, and Kirkman and Conor Hughes have the Void Rivals short. The G.I. Joe story is from Joshua Williamson and Tom Reilly. It’s a perfect jumping on point for new readers, and a perfect addition for long-time Energon fans.
