Happy Summer of Supergirl, Comic Shop Friends!

First, a huge thank you to everyone who came out for Late Nite Comics last Thursday! It was a record-breaking Late Nite! Mark your calendars for July’s Late Nite Comics on Thursday July 16th!

To coincide with the release of the new Supergirl movie this weekend, starting this Thursday, we will be giving out these four comics! You can get them free with any purchase! Celebrate the Summer of Supergirl! We’re still stocked up on the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow graphic novel in various formats, so you can read the story that inspired the movie! MARVEL COMICS

Marvel has three Ultimate Universe titles this week, Ultimate Endgame #5 that wraps up that final mini-series, Ultimate Impact Reborn #2 which continues the story of Miles Morales and the Origin Boxes in the 616, and finally, the final finale with this one-shot! Following the events in Ultimate Endgame #5, the creative teams from all of the Ultimate books come together for a farewell. Ultimate Spider-Man from Jonathan Hickman and Marco Checchetto, Ultimate Black Panther by Bryan Hill and Stefano Caselli, Ultimate X-Men by Peach Momoko, Ultimate Wolverine from Chris Condon and Alessandro Cappuccio, and Ultimates by Deniz Camp and Juan Frigeri. Five short stories that hint at what the future of the Ultimate Universe could be!

This is the one you’ve been asking about! The first of three hardcovers from John Byrne as he returns to Uncanny X-Men, the title he first drew fifty years ago! A trio of tales celebrating Supergirl and her legacy! It is her summer after all! First, it’s the follow up to the Supergirl and Lobo fight in Lobo #4 from last week! The Main Man and the Woman of Tomorrow, and Dawg and Krypto, got into it and destroyed a whole mess of stuff! Now they’re all on trial, and the truth of what happened leads to Lobo being sent off to be rehabilitated, and Dawg being sent to live in Midvale with Kara! What shenanigans will ensue? Will Streaky stop taunting Dawg? An adorable continuation from Sophie Campbell and Belen Ortega in “Main Man’s Best Friend”! Next, a rampaging robot meets its match with a Supergirl and Mary Marvel team-up! The two young women bond over their lives as orphans, and as super powered heroes, in Gail Simone and Emma Kubert’s “Lost Girls.” Then, Mark Waid and Cian Tormey ask “Who Is Supergirl?” On the Watchtower, Superboy, Jon Kent, and Steel are tasked with cleaning up the Super-Family files. Clearing up what is the truth of her past takes the three through Kara’s history, from her being sent to find Kal-El, through her death, and her travels across the cosmos without superpowers. (Read Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow!) Her legacy has inspired those in the DC Universe, and she just may be the coolest one in Superman’s family!

It’s the conclusion of the Wonder War Act One! Things happen that you wouldn’t believe would happen… It’s a head-to-head battle between Wonder Woman and the Matriarch, but the Amazons are evenly matched. Who will win? We will, because it’s another excellent issue, with a heart-stopping ending! And we learn how the Matriarch came to wield a Green Lantern ring! From Tom King and Daniel Sampere, with flashback pages by Bruno Redondo.

Double Wonder Woman week! We love when that happens! If you’re not reading the magnificent Absolute Wonder Woman, I’m questioning your decision to not read one of the most beautiful comic books out right now. Kelly Thompson teams with guest artist Dillon Snook for the two-part story, Friends & Neighbors. In Gateway City, the search for Wonder Woman continues, with some of her allies protecting the Hieron, and some venturing out to expand the search. While Barbara Minerva must make a choice about a partnership that may help her escape Area 41, it could end up changing her life forever. Sent back to the Underworld, Diana finds her home on the Wild Isle destroyed, and her mother missing. She must find who did this, and they had better hope Circe is still alive. After all she is her mother’s daughter…

SMALL PRESS COMICS

If you don’t like eyeball creatures, then this is NOT the book for you! A strange and abstract story from Jonathan Ball and GMB Chomichuk, that is difficult to describe. An ancient being becomes curious as astronauts orbit the moon in 1969. These aren’t hallucinations. “We set our sights on the stars, but then the stars… sighted us.” Is it coming back to Earth with them? Is it inside one of them? What does it want? I’m not sure about any of those, but it’s eerie and weird, and I’m intrigued.

We finally got the Wolf Man! The next new Universal Monsters mini-series from writer Joshua Williamson and artist Leomacs, follows college student Adam Jaeger. The Jaeger family has secrets, and Adam may not know all of them. Adam hasn’t made many friends at school, so he decides to take a chance and go to a party, but now he’s the only survivor of a vicious massacre. And he may be the one responsible. Adam will do anything to stop from becoming the Wolf Man, in a story about generational trauma, generational curses, and how the wealthy can influence their communities to hide horrors. Another great start for a Universal Monsters character!

My graphic novel pick of the week is the Casanova Compendium! It’s been quite awhile since I read any of the mini-series, but I always enjoyed this Matt Fraction, Fabio Moon, and Gabriel Ba superspy adventure weirdness! Casanova Quinn is ripped out of spacetime, he betrays everyone he ever loved, he destroys whole worlds, and it’s a psychedelic sci-fi romp through multiverses! This collects the Luxuria, Gula, and Avaritia four-issue minis. It’s sexy, it’s rock and roll, it’s worth checking out. Expand your mind, put on a record, and take in Casanova.
