Andrea’s Halloween Picks for 10.30.2024

Happy Halloween Comic Shop Friends!

And Happy 34th Anniversary to the shop! To celebrate, we have a brand-new shop T-shirt!

Inspired by the Short Box King shirts the staff all have, this new design was created by Jameson Campbell, with the blue and orange colors being the exact official shop colors! We have sizes small to 3XL, printed on a super soft blue shirt. They’re only $20, and we’ll throw in one of our old shop tees for free! (Sizes are limited for the older black and gray tees.)

We also have free comics left from Saturday’s Trick or Read event, so stop in and Trick or Treat Yo Self! Grab some candy too!

We’re gearing up for the Tony Fleecs signing on Sunday, November 10th! We’re stocked up on Feral, Stray Dogs, and Army of Darkness Forever graphic novels, and still have the tour-exclusive Feral variants. They’re $25 and all of that goes directly to Tony and his tour-mate, Tone Rodriguez, to support their nationwide signing tour!

It’s also the perfect time to pick up one of our Horror/Halloween/Spooky recommendations! Since it’s the fifth Wednesday of the month, your files are a little lighter, and what better way to celebrate Halloween than by reading some horror comics!

MARVEL COMICS

It’s an oversized finale issue as Zeb Wells says goodbye to Amazing Spider-Man! He wraps up his Tombstone storyline with John Romita Jr, then there are four more shorts all written by Wells! First, with Ed McGuinness, can Rek-Rap follow the “Doctor’s Orders”? Then, it’s “Team-Up: Part Two” with art by Todd Nauck, as Spider-Man and Jackpot have almost stopped Die-Chromator, but now they’re both late for a double date! Next, Wolverine and Spider-Man are “Bubs” on a special day, with art by Paolo Rivera. Last, Patrick Gleason draws “Mirrors”, with Chasm needing to talk to Peter about his life. And finally, there’s a preview of the next Amazing Spider-Man storyline from writer Joe Kelly and artist Mark Buckingham, “Ride’s Over”, which kicks off the Eight Deaths of Spider-Man!

DC COMICS

G. Willow Wilson’s Poison Ivy run has been consistently great, and this one-shot is no exception. With artist Mike Perkins, Wilson takes Poison Ivy and Swamp Thing on a trail of death that leads into the heart of the woods. Something is wrong with the trees, and those connected to the Green can hear them screaming out in pain. The Parliament of Trees has come together within these feral trees, and while some are willing to wait out the winter, Ivy knows more will die if she doesn’t find out who is at the center of the carnage. But with her being “half in, half out” of the Green, will her ties to the human world help or hinder on their journey? Can she and Swamp Thing survive the anger of the trees, or will they be consumed by the darkness deep inside?

After the recent Tom King Penguin series and the successful new TV show, find out where the Penguin came from with this special one-shot! Featuring his debut in Detective Comics #58 by Bill Finger and Bob Kane, leading into some twisted recollections of his origin, and his calculating and ruthless criminal nature, with Alan Grant and Sam Kieth’s Secret Origins Special #1, and Jason Aaron and Jason Pearson’s Joker’s Asylum: Penguin #1. But it kicks off with a brand-new story written by Jeremy Adams, with art by Howard Porter, which leads into the Penguin’s next moves as DC goes All In!

SMALL PRESS COMICS

An extra-length one-shot nightmare from Hyde Street! What’s more horrifying than generational pressures and societal expectations?! What’s creepier than the creeping dread of not being good enough, pretty enough, thin enough?! Find out here that as a bride-to-be, Lily is pressured by her mother and grandmother to lose weight so as to fit into a wedding dress. Health guru, Miss Goodbody (No relation to Slim Goodbody.) has the solution for these women, a path to happiness that starts with a supplement called Devour. But on Hyde Street, there’s always something sinister lurking behind the friendly façade, and Lily is about to find out exactly what. Created by Maytal Zchut and Leila Leiz.
