It’s funny how comics unite us…

Today I called someone to have my air conditioning serviced as there was an issue where the house simply is not cooling down enough.. anyone in Cleveland area of late can likely understand this all too well.  Anyway, as we’re talking he mentions the person he works for a lot who is the brother-in-law of My friend and co-worker… said individual owns a restaurant in Cleveland on 40th.  I tell him I am not familiar with it and he relates that the restaurant scenes in American Splendor were filmed there.  I smile and nod and relate that the comic shop scenes were filmed with our own Carol and John’s. He laughed and began talking about Free Comic Book Day and the lines down the way, how he doesn’t attend too often but he has a few comics he cherishes such as Felix # 1.  It was a pleasant conversation about a medium of entertainment that we, two people with otherwise nothing in common, shared. It’s just funny how things come about   John Woods – Webmaster

Yelpers Assemble!

Some of you may have heard that the people at Yelp! (if you haven’t heard of Yelp! please check out the Cleveland Yelp! page Here) have a bit of a club for Elite members where they hold parties, have a good time, and everyone enjoys themselves.  Well they chose our shop most recently for their Elite event.  The Below is the article found here and some subsequent reviews of the event here! Cleveland Yelpers Assemble! at Carol & John’s Comic Shop Over 50 Elites and guests had a Marvel-ous time this past Thursday at our comic booked themed event,Yelpers Assemble! With the filming of The Avengers in downtown Cleveland sizzling the box office, why not celebrate our comic roots? I mean, we *do* have the Superman House in our own backyard (ahem, bragging rights…) Carol & John’s Comic Shop know what’s up, so they flew in like a superhero and helped us host a victorious Yelp party with superpower panache! Long time yelper, George S, said it best: “I’ve never been to a Yelp Party… now, I’ll try to be a regular. To put it simply, it was so...

Wrapping Up

Wrapping Up

Well, with this posting we close down Free Comic Book day 2012. One of the surprise successes of the event was our sketch cover raffle prizes. This was a true testament to the fact that we only put the shell of an event together and it grows organically from there. Cleveland’s Free Comic Book Day is that big because Cleveland helps make it that big. We got 28 submissions from 24 artists in Cleveland who did one of a kind sketch covers for free to support free comic book day. These cover were raffled off post event.  You can take a look at them here: 2012 FCBD Sketch Covers While there is a link to each artist’s website with the picture, we would also like to personally thank the following people and provide you with a way to follow there work if possible. These are people who care about art, community, Cleveland and comics; and are people to keep on eye on. I would also like to thank Jim Giar specifically, as with out his orginal work on this project it...

Thanks to all Cleveland artists who helped make Free Comic Book Day 2012 even more awesome by doing original Sketch Covers! I would like to commend these individuals as being true supporters of the comic book community in Cleveland. With all the Avengers mania in town I salute the fact that is all still comes down to one man at a drawing board, Jack Kirby. Some people may forget that but we certainly do not, and we respect the work these people have put into this project.  Please check out the link to the gallery below!
