The Cleveland Campaign to Help Mike Meyer, Superman collector

The Cleveland Campaign to Help Mike Meyer, Superman collector

Hey Everyone, John Dudas here, Co-Owner of Carol and John’s Comic Book Shop. Right now I’m also representing POP!: The Comic Culture Club and respectfully the greater Cleveland area in the effort to help Mike Meyer.   Who is Mike Meyer? Mike Meyer is a 48 year old mentally disabled individual who was recently robbed of his near life long Superman Collection. Mike’s father died when he was 20 years old and his mother died 3 years later. Mike’s been on Social Security ever since but still works a job at McDonalds to support himself, which I personally respect. Many groups are forming through out America to slowly correct an injustice, most notably on Facebook as ‘Superfriends Collection to benefit Mike in St Louis’ and ‘Save Superman – Help Mike Meyer” The attempt is to round up Superman memerobilia and present it to Mike. This is where Carol and John’s Comic Book Shop comes in. We are acting as a drop off location for anyone who would like to drop of any Superman comics, memoribilia, greeting cards with messages, or...

Carol and John’s and Information on DC’s New 52!

Carol and John’s and Information on DC’s New 52!

A FEW WORDS FROM JOHN D: Well, nest week begins a whole new era for DC Comics as they restart there entire Universe with 52 new #1 titles.  This is the beginning of a brand new era for not only DC, but for the Comics Industry as well as this movement is the beginning of the digitalization age of comics. All DC titles will be available for download on the same day they are released in comic book shops.  What does this have to do with us? Hopefully nothing.  Digital download sales count for less than 5% of all comic book sales but as we are a store with 20 years in and looking at 20 years more we have to say that now more than ever is the time to support your local comic shop! (That is am us) Just do an internet search on what happened to Atomic Comics in Arizona this week.  While we may not be the best, we feel we always have an eye on the future, and that will keep us around for years to come.  As Carol has said...

Carol and John’s Welcomes the Avengers!

Carol and John’s Welcomes the Avengers!

This is certainly an exciting time in our city’s history for comic book fans. We’ve got the Avengers filming on our own, so to speak, front lawn. As the last comic shop in the city of Cleveland proper (amazing, isn’t it?) we’d like to give a big hello to all our guests visiting from out of town. We love this city.  We’ve been here for 20 years, in one form or another, and we hope you have the time to look around and see the things that we love about it. The blue collar work ethic instilled in it’s people will amaze you; their devotion to things and causes incredible. For those who don’t know my comic book reading started in the late 70’s when I’d visit my great grandfather’s house on East 78th and Ovington. He was a Polish immigrant who could speak English but not read it very well. So my family would buy him stacks of comics to read to learn words from the pictures and context. For me this meant every visit to grandpa’s house was a chance to rummage through...

Carol and John go to San Diego Comicon!

Carol and John go to San Diego Comicon!

Hey everyone! In case you haven’t heard our humble shop here in Cleveland, Ohio has been nominated for the Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer award! This means we’re packing up out things and heading out to Comicon for the awards ceremony and to enjoy the madness we hear is San Diego! After being nominated we had to create the video seen below to show our store’s overall image and identity and also do a little explaining about why we do what we do. We also had to create a binder documenting our over 20 years in business showing our community service, events, dedication to promoting diverse materials and knowledge in our chosen field. The binder tops out at 48 pages and was as concise as we could make it. Being nominated is an honor. Knowing some of the other stores who have been nominated and standing along side them is an honor. Being able to represent our city is an honor. Lastly, I would like to commend the entire staff of our shop and everyone involved in shaping our...

2011 Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer Award

2011 Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer Award

First and Foremost, if you have not previously heard, we, Carol and John’s, have been nominated for the 2011 Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer Award. This is a major accomplishment to be recognized as such and while you have heard it a million times in the Oscars, Emmy’s, etc (Which note this IS the equivalent for such an award for a comic shop) it truly is an honor just to be listed among the nominees. As part of the nomination and presentation to the judging group we were to create a video detailing the store, the environment, and all the store has to offer it’s customers.  Please take a couple moments to view our YouTube site Here and while you are there, subscribe to our video feed to keep updated as we will be doing much more with this in months to come.

A Brief Thanks

A Brief Thanks

Just a quick and uneventful note to state a heartfelt thank you to any and all who have come to our doors in the past days, weeks, months, and years and have continued to make this shop the success that it is. In the last few months we celebrated our 20th anniversary, experienced a wonderful Christmas, the move of our store, the birth of the miraculous Zoe, another spectacular Free Comic Book Day, and still have much more to come in the future so thank you for sticking by us as we have striven to stick by you. We appreciate all you do for us
