We are ten days away from Free Comic Book Day! Saturday May 2nd!

Check out all the details on our website, but here’s a brief rundown:

Dave Michelinie will be here from 10am to 6pm and you can get one item signed for free! If you’d like more than that, each signature is $10 and again that all goes to Purring Pals, his local cat charity!

You can pick twelve free comics from the over 40 available! We’ll have them separated by All Ages, Teen, and Adult, so you can choose accordingly. There will be plenty to last the day, but as always, we say to come early for the best selection. There will also be local artists and creators in the FCBD room, so make sure you check them all out! Support Cleveland’s art scene!

And the Rust Belt Monster Collective will be here painting a Spider-Man/Venom/Carnage themed mural outside the shop!

MARVEL COMICS

To celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the first time Spider-Man and Superman met, both DC and Marvel did new anthology one-shots! Marvel’s Spider-Man/Superman is out this week and it is a delight! Featuring nine stories full of friends and foes of the Man of Steel and your Friendly Neighborhood web-slinger, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

The main story, “Our Kryptonite”, from Brad Meltzer and Pepe Larraz has Spider-Man and Superman trapped by Lex Luthor and the Green Goblin. They have no idea where they are, they’re weakened, and it seems as though there’s no way out. To distract himself, Peter asks Clark to ask him questions. “Why do you do it?” What follows is a wonderful conversation between the two heroes.

Next, take a trip to the 1930s as Spider-Man Noir encounters Golden Age Superman in Dan Slott and Marcos Martin’s “Metropolis Marvels”! An innocent man is about to be executed, and Spider-Man is going to make sure the person responsible pays. But he forgot about the new player in town, who is faster than a speeding bullet!

Gwen Stacy and Lana Lang bond over their “Sweethearts” Peter Parker and Clark Kent. There may be a big difference between the big city and the small town the ladies are from, but there are a lot of similarities between the young men in their lives. Secrets and excuses, but also selflessness and caring. From Joe Kelly and Humberto Ramos.

It’s Mysterio Vs. Superman featuring the Thing in “Identity War” from Geoff Johns and Gary Frank. Mysterio uses a Red Lantern to amplify the Hulk’s rage and pump blind fury into the world’s bloodstream! The few heroes who seem immune include Superman, Captain America, She-Hulk, and the Thing. Punching and clobberin’ aren’t working, so Superman tries a different approach to calming the rage, talking to Hulk face-to-face.

“Ghosting” by Louise Simonson and Todd Nauck is Hobgoblin Vs. Steel! Hobgoblin has stolen a new invention, Steel Dust, that can cloak him. But Steel’s not that concerned, especially when another hammer-wielding hero shows up!

Ghost-Spider and Supergirl meet for the first time in Stephanie Phillips and Phil Noto’s “Remarkable”. Ghost-Spider is hoping to meet the Last Son of Krypton, and Supergirl was hoping to meet “one of the cool ones” when she hears about a Spider sighting. When Livewire shows up, each one’s stubbornness may get in the way of stopping her.

“The One Thing…” from Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli finds Miles Morales helping Superman with a big, ominous glowing thing, and getting some advice. Before they have to fight Dormammu and Brainiac!

Symbiotes in Metropolis! Wonder Woman and Jane Foster Thor! Jason Aaron and Russell Dauterman present “The Wondrous & The Worthy”! Jane has her doubts about becoming Thor, but Diana knows that the hammer is right where it belongs.

It’s “One of Those Days” for Spider-Man and Superman in Jeph Loeb and Jim Cheung’s story. Peter is dealing with grief and Clark is there to support him and offer some words of encouragement. A lovely end to an excellent one-shot.

The Death Spiral has spiraled to its conclusion! Torment is moving closer to Peter, Mary Jane, and Eddie to close the spiral. And the choices they make to stop him may spiral out into more consequences. Written by Joe Kelly, with artists Ed McGuinness and Carlos Gomez with Francesco Manna.

Following right after the end of Death Spiral, school is in session in the new five-issue ASM: Spider-Versity mini-series from writers Jordan Morris and Joe Kelly, and artist Pere Perez! Miles Morales has called together Ghost-Spider, Silk, Spider-Boy, Araña, and Spider-Girl to prepare them for whatever comes next. Who is coming to teach them? None other than former Resolute Spider-Man Norman Osborn! These kids will learn the skills to meet the next threat the only way the Green Goblin knows how, because the next threat may just well BE the Green Goblin! Miles seems sure that Norman will be a benefit, but the other Spiders aren’t convinced, especially when he crashes through a window and starts throwing pumpkin bombs! But there’s one Spider that Osborn didn’t count on – Spider-Woman! A fun team-up book, with a group of characters that want their team to be less chaotic than the Avengers, and with less kissing than the X-Men!

DC COMICS

Wally and Linda are trapped in a dimension of mirrors! Mirror Master’s murder clones are after them, they don’t know how they’re going to escape, but they’re going to keep running. As they find mirrors to other places, some from both of their pasts, they come face-to-face with the actual Mirror Master! He needs Wally’s help, but can he be trusted? Doing what he says may be the only way Wally can get his father back, but at what cost? This issue of Jeff Lemire and Haining’s Absolute Flash presents an interesting reading experience! Get ready to read like you’re in the Mirror dimension!

Locked in a battle with Giovanni Zatara, Wonder Woman’s last chance to stop him is to use the Troika, and show him the crossroads, but she is not in the right state of mind to wield the lasso. To free Zatara, Diana puts herself at risk, and she may never be the same. The penultimate issue in the Season of the Witch storyline reveals more of what was given to her by the gods as a child, brings in an ally, and reveals another terror released by Cale. Will Diana be able to defeat it on her own? Another excellent issue from Kelly Thompson and Hayden Sherman.

The strange and delightful Superman: Kryptonite Spectrum mini-series is collected! This is one of our favorites, and if you haven’t read it yet, now is your chance! Blending genre, tone, and form, this is five issues of pure enjoyment of the character, and the comic book medium, as Superman is exposed to new forms of Kryptonite, like purple, cobalt, and speckled, each with an odd result. The creative team behind Ice Cream Man, Prince and Morazzo are continually pushing the boundaries of sequential storytelling in new and interesting ways.

If you liked this series, or Ice Cream Man, get ready because W. Maxwell Prince and Martin Morazzo are bringing Deadman back to life with a new six-issue series starting June 3rd! Add it to your pull list now!

SMALL PRESS COMICS

France, 1429. The Hundred Year War rages, and sickness and starvation spread across the land. A peaceful farmer and his young daughter, Foy, live a quiet life. Until a group of men attack them on the road, killing the father. When the men come for her, Foy knows that if she prays and her faith is strong enough, she’ll be protected. And she is. The Corpse Knight rises, and now they must embark on a quest. Foy will come face to face with the darkness of man, the dark side of miracles, and will question if the man she knew her father to be still remains within the Corpse Knight. Writer Michael Chaves and artist Matthew Roberts have crafted a historical horror fantasy tale, where family is still family, whether they’re alive, dead, or undead.

Creators Aditya Bidikar and Som present a body horror cautionary tale about parasocial relationships and blind celebrity worship, set in the Bollywood film industry. Priyanka has followed actor Ayesha Sen’s career and knows everything about her. Her obsession leads her to enter a contest to try to meet Ayesha, but the once in a lifetime chance goes awry. Now Ayesha has announced that the film she’s working on will be her last, as she plans to retire. Priyanka is not pleased with the news, and forces a meeting, leading to her deciding that if Ayesha isn’t going to live the life she is supposed to, then someone else should. Societal pressures, family disappointments, and lost potential all build to force Priyanka to do something drastic, leading this book into an exploration of celebrity culture, identity, and image, that mixes Cronenberg films with erotic fiction.

To celebrate ten years of kinetic action and dark humor, Andrew Maclean’s Head Lopper returns with an all-new, oversized number one! This issue begins with Death recounting early tales and the history of Head Lopper. He’s not just great at lopping off heads, he enjoys it too! Then, in the first instalment of The Heart of the Godbeast, Norgal fights any number of beasties, punching off heads, and slicing off heads, with his severed-witch-head companion, Agatha, in tow. Then, this semi-annual adventure comic wraps up with “A Tale of Three Witches”! Described as “The Lord of the Rings if the Coen Brothers had made it.”, this is high-fantasy carnage at its finest!
