MARVEL COMICS

Take a trip back in time to one of Spider-Man and Punisher’s earliest encounters! This five-issue mini-series from Dan Abnett and Matteo Della Fonte tells the tale of a team-up set not too long after their first meeting. Frank needs a little help stopping Father Crime from putting together a crew. Spidey’s little more than a distraction, but going against someone with powers and a costume, needs someone with powers and a costume. If Punisher can get past Spider-Man’s puns, and if Spider-Man can get Punisher to use non-lethal methods, the two just might make a pretty good team. They each have their reasons for working together, and they each have their theories as to why the other does what he does. When an ally of Punisher calls for assistance, another team-up leads them to learn there may be more similarities between them than they realize. And they just may learn a thing or two about being a hero from each other. This is one of the best reads this week!

What if teenage Jessica Jones had been bitten by the radioactive spider? Becoming a sensation as Spider-Girl, Jessica lived her life in the spotlight, but after revealing the Green Goblin’s true identity, she retreated into near obscurity. Now the surly former superhero just wants to leave her past in the past, but when an explosion at Kingpin’s home looks to be caused by the Green Goblin, Jessica is forced to follow the lead. Someone has come back to haunt her, but can the out of shape bartender get it together enough to stop them? Another great What If…? one-shot, this time from writer Justin Ireland and artist David Messina!

DC COMICS

Stephanie Williams steps in to write the two-part Wonder War Interlude, with artist Clayton Henry. As Steve Trevor and Trinity return home, Steve recounts a story once told to him by Diana. It’s the story of how the young Princess of Themyscira came to be the woman she is now, hero, warrior, mother. The origin of Wonder Woman is told through the eyes of the man who loves her, and told from a father to his daughter. It’s a lovely way for Lizzie to learn about her mother’s motivations, and a lovely way for her to connect with the father she just met. Diana has always been one to defy the Fates. She has never fully accepted what she was told her destiny would be, and Trinity may take after her mother in that way. Will Diana’s past hold the key to saving the future?

We’re now halfway through Pornsak Pichetshote and Rafael Albuquerque’s Absolute Green Arrow run, and I honestly don’t know where this story will end up. Dinah is still on the trail of the Green Arrow Killer, but when a trap set for the killer goes wrong, it’s just the start of the case becoming more warped. Finding Queen’s protégé Roy Harper leads to twist after twist. Mia Dearden has vanished. Roy believes Oliver is alive. Star City support of the Green Arrow Killer is growing. Roy leads Dinah to somewhere connected to Hammond and what she sees is truly unsettling. This is a horror book, and who knows how much darker and twisted it’ll get before the end.

The Elseworlds epic returns! Tom Taylor and Otto Schmidt continue the Dark Knights of Steel saga after the formation of the League. It seems like peace will reign, as the Kingdom of Amazonia welcomes the Kingdom of Storms and the House of El to their island for a momentous occasion. But there is treachery brewing, with treasonous agents hiding in the Kingdoms, and a war threatening to rise from the seas. Bruce has left, but for someone in hiding he certainly makes his presence known, making it easy for someone searching to find him. Zala joins the Amazons, but something is not quite right with her. An attack on Amazonia brings a new ally, but as peace is shattered the League may need more friends to root out the foes, as the darkest days are still to come.

This issue features three shorts, “Fable”, “Ruins”, and “Breathe”, all written by Hickman and Spencer, and with art by Huddleston, del Mundo, and Jerome Opena, that connect into a brief introduction to this new world.

For those of you who are waiting for Ryan Coogler’s new X-Files series, this new Si Spurrier and Mike Dowling book will help fill that void! Strange events are happening across the globe. A giant tiger-like creature emerges in the Muzaffarnagar Landfill, mauling a security guard. Blogger Gloria Monday has chosen this event to investigate first. There are inconsistencies in the guard’s story, and a nameless benefactor is funding her trip to find out what really happened. Things get even stranger when Gloria and her guide Sara meet a man in the landfill who asks, “What escaped?” He has seen something, he believes something is speaking to him, that he was given an idea of a scientific breakthrough.
